Chapter 2-Expressing Opinions

In Chapter 1, we learned that Anna’s father is a journalist who is writing articles that speak against Hitler.

PROMPT: If there was a possibility that you would be put in jail if you expressed your opinion, would you do it?  Explain.

  1. I would do it because I might convince people that my idea is right. Then they will stand up with me and convince more people that that what these people are standing up for is right, and more, and more, and so much more people than the government can handle. More people will be so happy that they stood up for what was right to them.

  2. I would express my opinion because if somebody didn’t speak up then nothing would be done about it. Being as daring as I am I wouldn’t care if I was put in jail. I would easily be free and openly express my own opinon. Even if I had to move from place to place I would tell everyone to help even if I had to would learn a different language besides my own. Also Hitler as most of us now know was an extremely horrid man he made really terrible decisions for Germany. Plus they always say “Actions are stronger than words.”. Aswell as for the sake of human beings being alive, if Hitler hadn’t died humans would be extinct. I am Ruari Purcell and I approve this message!!!!!

  4. Well it depends on what will happen. If I will be put in jail for 2 years yes but if it is 20 years no. It will all depends on what will happen

    2. I would go 20 year in jail if it meant that my opinion got heard by thousands of people. I would save my country!!

    3. Yes I would do it because it is better safe than sorry. And if I had to do something to save the country, I would do it for my country. So this is why I would go to jail for saving our country.

  6. I think that I would express my opinion because I think it is important to say what you feel and what you believe in, I don’t think it would matter if you go to jail as long as you were heard.

  7. If I was a writer and there was a possibility that I would go to jail if I spoke up for myself I would still do it. I would want my opinion heard! I don’t really care if I go to jail. I would want my opinion heard in a tough time! My opinion might make other people stand up for themselves. Then maybe there would be to many people for the “opponent” to handle. Then we could put things back in place. If it does not I will not put up a fight to not go to jail. I will welcome jail like a long lost friend!

  8. I would express my opinion because I would run away almost immediately after I expressed my opinion, but if I was caught I would express my opinion in jail and they couldn't do anything about it.The only thing they could do is keep me in there for a longer period of time.If I didn’t express opinion I would run away so I could still express my opinion.

    2. Why would you run away from what you say. I would miss you, you are my buddy Ben.

  9. If there was a possibility that I could go to jail for expressing my opinion, I would still do it. I would still express my opinion because I think everyone should, and not keep your feelings inside. When I would express my feelings I would not run away from what I say. I would do that because I don’t care what would happen to me, as long as I get to say or to write what I think is right. From my point of view I would encourage you to express what you think is right, and to not run away right after you do so. Still if you would run away I would respect your feelings and let you go, but I still would want you to stay.

  10. I would express my opinion because if something was wrong no one would stand against it, and then it will eventually turn into something very bad like Hitler. I wouldn't run away and hide I would want to be heard more and more until I got a bunch of people to help go against it, and then it will finally go away and stay behind us. And if I go to jail I still know I did something great to help people stand up for their opinion.

  11. It is a hard decision to make because of a billion reasons, but based on the side I am most leaning toward, I would say that yes I would express my opinion and here is the main reasons why,
It would make a strong point to the country that they are making the wrong choice, even if you went to jail for it.
If nobody said anything about it many bad things would happen, there would likely be more wars than ever, and maybe all the jewish people would die.
Last, I would say this because I came up with this quote based on other quotes, “ I would state my opinion because I am strong, I am unique, and no one can defeat me!”

  12. I think I would want expressed my opinion because I would believe in what I say. It is not right to get thrown into jail. I believe in trust and people should believe in trust too! You should stand up for what you believe in.

  13. If I could expressed what I thought but would go to jail for doing it I would because it would be the right thing to do. The message would tell people what is right and people will follow. Even though I would be in jail people would read my thought and that will make a difference. If I didn’t say what I thought and stayed safe there wouldn’t be that difference and the world wouldn’t be the same. Even though I be in jail it would be better that way.

  14. If I could speak my voice and share my opinion I would, but if I would be arrested for it I would still write but not to the public. I would share with very few people. I might have wrote a few books and shared them with people that might have been in something like the resistance but would not make a speech or write in the paper. So I’m sort of in the middle with this and what I would do.:)

  15. If there was a possible chance saying that I should go to jail, just for speaking what I believe, I think I would keep speaking my feelings, because that’s the right thing to do in my opinion. I could join a resistance or flee the country, and I got caught and sent to jail, it wouldn’t be for being a criminal, or hurting someone. It would just be because I felt like I was speaking the truth. So it wouldn’t be an actual crime. Or I could still speak about it to family, just not to public.

    1. We expressed our thoughts in the same way, but I was more direct about specific wars and resistance.

  16. If I had a choice to possibly go to jail and express my opinion against something I disagreed with, or keep safe with things in the world I would express my opinion about things. If people think about things long enough they would figure out that things are wrong in at bad times. That is what happened to the Roman empire when they had the world in their hands. If you remember back in fourth grade in Number The Stars the resistance fought the Germans. That was them expressing their opinion just with the consequence being death. They knew what they were doing with the consequences. In the times of the Roman’s the people realized that they were in a bad situation. The people were not near as powerful than the people in charge. With all these people fighting why should I not??

  17. Yes, I would express my opinion even if I had to go to jail because people can’t tell me what to do with my writing. I’d write whatever I wanted to say about Hitler. So I would express my opinion.

  18. After reading all the chapters, I think the main theme was being a family. Before Papa left, the family was a happy family. But when they all left Berlin, the family wasn’t close anymore. When Papa left for Zurich, Anna, Mama, and Max followed and ended up living in Zurich. After a couple weeks, Mama, and Papa left to go see Paris, France for a week. When Mama, and Papa got back, they had decided to live in Paris. For two years, Anna and her family lived there and would get into arguments here and there. They drove a part more and more. They decided to leave Paris, they were closer as a family in London, England. That was how the book ended.
